ADDRESSING THE CONCERN
#01
SMALL SCALE APPAREL MANUFACTURERING INDUSTRIES
( SSAMI )
A Fashion industry segment that has always been ignored and suffered the most
In developing countries, small scale apparel manufacturing industries have bitterly faced the social, environmental, and cultural consequences associated with rapid production cycles, resources overuse, waste production, environmental pollution, and unethical labor conditions caused due to unethical consumer and retailers buying behavior
Local and Unbranded fashion retailers around the globe chase for the cheap needles to source their clothes from small manufacturers and countries with low labor costs and poor environmental governance. They put unrealistic low pricing for the manufacture. This pressure to reduce costs and speed up production in developing countries such as India takes SSAMI in a state where they face environmental and social corners being cut in the name of profit from retailers. Importantly, this continuous accumulation of cheap garments is only possible because of consumer demand for cheap clothing. Consumers are not even aware of their behavior. That, in turn, has serious consequences on our health, our planet, and on garment workers’ lives
" The target of this manifesto is to appraise the small-scale clothing manufacturing industry and aware the consumer and retailers about their behavior towards them.
